Colloquium Genova. Simbolo e gesto: la determinazione di genere nelle statuette fittili del mondo greco

Genoa, April 5, 2016, University of Genoa, Aula Magna of the School of Human Sciences, via Balbi, 2.

Among the new approaches applied to the study of votive terracottas borrowed from anthropology is the application of gender theory, that which explores socially perceived gender identity in different areas of the ancient world. According to the archaeological studies that address this issue, the focus of research is concentrated on the recognition and the diversification of gender in material culture at large, intended as a place of construction of the representative system of society. In our case, this research perspective applies to the gender differentiation that one finds among figurative terracottas and their complete comprehension by means of symbols and gestures that then shed light on their different use within the orbit of ritual.

This gender differentiation also may be accompanied by a precise indication of age. A focus on gender within the context of ritual events is most important, given that the passages of status from one life phase to the next, especially for women, were highlighted by festivals in which figurines had a symbolic value as substitutes in terracotta for the the dedicator.
